EU State's PM Says Zelensky 'afraid war will end'
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is reportedly anxious about the implications of Donald Trump winning the US presidential election, as it may result in a halt to military and financial aid from Washington to Kyiv. This sentiment was expressed by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

In a Saturday interview with Radio Slovensko, Fico highlighted how Trump’s potential policies could affect global relations and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He noted that during a meeting with Zelensky at the EU summit held in Budapest on November 7, the Ukrainian leader appeared distinctly troubled.

“Have you ever seen a person who is afraid that the war will end? I saw him, and his name is Vladimir Zelensky,” Fico remarked, indicating that Zelensky seemed “shocked that Trump won and that there could be a halt to aid from the United States.”

Throughout his presidential campaign, Trump has made repetitive claims about resolving the conflict in Ukraine within “24 hours,” though he has not detailed a concrete plan for how he would accomplish this. Fico contended that hostilities will persist as long as Western nations continue supplying significant amounts of arms to the conflict.

“That means there will be some fundamental decisions regarding the war in Ukraine,” the Prime Minister elaborated. He characterized Trump as someone who “simply doesn’t like wars as such,” pointing to the former president's predilection for tariffs and sanctions as a businessman rather than military interventions, suggesting that he would undertake “decisive steps.”

Should Washington withdraw its financial backing from Kyiv, Fico posited that the European Union would need to modify its strategies and advocate for negotiations rather than continuing to bolster Ukraine’s military efforts with the hope of eventually defeating Russia.

“We are again acting as a military cabinet in relation to Ukraine… Is the EU ready to assume all the costs of the war in Ukraine?” Fico questioned.

He argued against the prevailing notion that unwavering support for Ukraine will lead to Russia's downfall, stating, “There is still an opinion that if we keep supporting Ukraine, we will bring Russia to its knees, but that does not work.” Fico emphasized that “the EU is a peace project, and the war must be stopped.”

During the Budapest summit, EU leaders deliberated the sustainability of financing the Ukrainian military in light of Trump potentially withdrawing US support, according to Bloomberg. Sources indicated that their primary concern was not merely financial but rather the available military resources predominantly supplied by the US.

In contrast, Zelensky appeared more focused on financial support, urging the EU to allocate approximately $300 billion in frozen Russian sovereign assets to Ukraine, should US assistance be cut off. He asserted that the funds “rightfully belongs” to Ukraine and expressed uncertainty over Trump’s intentions, stating that only Kyiv should dictate what should and should not be prioritized in the agenda for resolving the conflict.
