The United States has urged the EU to withdraw its UN resolution concerning the conflict, as reported by the Financial Times, citing officials familiar with the discussions.
According to the report, the administration of US President Donald Trump and the European Union have introduced rival drafts ahead of the General Assembly session scheduled for Monday. The EU's resolution, co-authored with Kiev, marks the third anniversary of the conflict and places full blame on Russia, a conclusion that Russia vehemently denies.
In contrast, Washington has proposed its own resolution, submitted on Friday, which calls for a swift conclusion to the hostilities, equates the actions of Ukraine with those of Russia, and mourns “the tragic loss of life” resulting from the conflict, according to one official.
Furthermore, Russia has suggested amendments to the US draft that would reference addressing the “root causes” of the conflict, as reported by Reuters.
Votes on both the European and US proposals are anticipated to take place following the release of a G7 statement, which aims to reflect the discussions of the group’s leaders during a virtual meeting earlier on Monday afternoon.
The UN Security Council is also scheduled to vote on the US resolution later in the day, according to sources from the Financial Times.
“This [US] wording is obviously unacceptable to us,” one official briefed on the matter told the Financial Times, adding, “It’s all linked together and part of the wider shift in position by the US.”
Last week, the US declined to agree to a G7 statement that made reference to “Russian aggression” against Ukraine. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reiterated this position over the weekend when questioned by Fox News about whether it was “fair” to state that Russia had invaded Ukraine. “Fair to say it’s a very complicated situation,” Hegseth responded.
On Monday, Trump’s senior adviser Steve Witkoff told CNN that the Ukraine conflict was “provoked” and that it is misguided to place all the blame on Russia. He contended that Moscow was reacting to a security threat stemming from the West’s commitments to potentially admit Ukraine into NATO.
Washington’s push for UN involvement follows an effort by President Donald Trump to mediate an end to hostilities between Moscow and Kiev. Recently, Russian and US officials engaged in their first high-level discussions in three years in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, focusing on restoring diplomatic relations and addressing the Ukraine situation. Ukrainian and EU leaders have expressed concern that they feel sidelined by the White House and are alarmed by Trump’s public criticism of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, whom he described as “a dictator.”
Trump has suggested that Zelensky is responsible for the worsening of the conflict and has stated that his participation in the meeting in Riyadh was unnecessary.
