The US House of Representatives has passed legislation that prohibits biological males from competing on girls' teams in schools that receive federal funding. This measure extends to all levels of education, including kindergartens, elementary schools, high schools, as well as colleges and universities.

The Protection of Women and Girls In Sports Act stipulates that student-athletes may only participate in sports teams that align with their gender assigned at birth.

“The American people sent a clear message in November. They want us to return to common sense, and we're going to see if Democrats have heard that message,” House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, stated to reporters prior to the vote on Tuesday.

“Everyone’s talking about their children today. I’ve got two sons and two daughters, and we see the difference. Of course everyone does. And it's kind of silly to deny it,” he further commented.

The legislation secured a final vote tally of 218 in favor and 206 against. Two Texas Democrats, Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzales, sided with the Republicans, while another, Don Davis from North Carolina, voted “present.” All three Democrats won their seats by narrow margins in districts that have leaned Republican in recent elections.

“Why are we even having to discuss this? It's amazing to me that the idea that we would have XY chromosome males competing and taking the place of women and girls in sports is just mind-blowing,” remarked Doug LaMalfa, a Republican from California, during the legislative debate. He also expressed confusion over why feminists and activists who championed women's rights were not vocal on the issue.

In response, Democrats began referring to the bill as the “Child Predator Empowerment Act.” Oregon Democrat Andrea Salinas argued that the legislation established an “unfair playing field” because it permitted any parent to challenge the presence of transgender athletes, a situation she described as “rare.”

“Republicans should stop focusing on culture wars and start getting to work on lowering costs, investing in public education, and increasing access to affordable health care,” asserted Eugene Vindman, a Democratic representative from Virginia, who is a Ukrainian immigrant and brother of Alexander Vindman, a key figure in the first impeachment of former President Donald Trump in 2019.

Trump is set to be inaugurated for his second term on Monday.

This marks the second instance the House has passed this particular bill regarding transgender athletes, originally proposed by Florida Republican Greg Steube. It was first approved in 2023, with a vote of 219-203, but faced dismissal in the Senate when Democrats held the majority. Now under Republican control, the new Senate leadership has indicated it intends to advance the bill promptly.
