A US Navy EA-18G Growler electronic warfare jet crashed into San Diego Bay near Shelter Island on Wednesday morning.
The incident took place around 10:15 AM local time during a "go-around maneuver," where the pilots had just landed the jet and were preparing to take off again, according to Navy spokesperson Cmdr. Beth Teach.
Videos circulating online show the aircraft, landing gear still deployed, nosediving into the water. Witnesses reported that it remained airborne for several minutes before suddenly descending into the bay, generating a plume of water and debris that soared more than 20 meters high.
The rescued crew members were conscious when retrieved and were subsequently taken to a local hospital in stable condition. The Navy has not yet disclosed their identities.
The EA-18G Growler, a carrier-based electronic warfare fighter, crashed during what was reportedly a training exercise. Updates indicate that both pilots survived.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, with the US Coast Guard securing the wreckage site in San Diego Harbor.
The EA-18G Growler, developed by Boeing, is an advanced airborne electronic attack aircraft that provides tactical jamming and electronic protection for US military forces. This incident follows a previous crash involving an EA-18G Growler near Mount Rainier in Washington state last October, which resulted in the deaths of both crew members.
