On Wednesday, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for an unconditional ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, aiming to bring an end to the ongoing 14-month conflict.
The non-binding resolution was passed with a vote of 158 in favor, 9 against, and 13 abstentions. It calls for “an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire” and demands “the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”
This action by the General Assembly followed the US veto of a similar resolution in the UN Security Council the previous month. At that time, the US maintained that it could not support a proposal that was not directly linked to the release of all Israeli hostages still held by Hamas. The US reiterated its stance during Wednesday’s vote, with Ambassador Robert Wood citing the resolution as “shameful and wrong.”
“At a time when Hamas is feeling isolated due to the ceasefire in Lebanon, the draft resolution on a ceasefire in Gaza risks sending a dangerous message to Hamas that there’s no need to negotiate or release the hostages,” Wood stated during the General Assembly session.
Israeli ambassador Danny Danon also expressed concerns, arguing that an unconditional ceasefire would primarily benefit Hamas. “The vote today is not a vote for compassion. It is a vote for complicity,” he asserted.
According to local Hamas-run authorities, nearly 45,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza as a result of Israeli military action since October 2023. The UN has issued repeated warnings about the severe humanitarian crisis in the densely populated Palestinian enclave. Muhannad Hadi, the UN Middle Peace coordinator, stated to the Security Council last month, “as winter approaches, the horror in Gaza continues to grind on with no end in sight.”
Israel maintains that its operations in Gaza will persist until all hostages are freed and the threats posed by Hamas and its allied factions are neutralized.
The conflict escalated on October 7, 2023, when Hamas conducted a surprise assault on Israeli cities, resulting in approximately 1,200 fatalities and over 250 abductions. Israeli officials report that around 100 hostages are still believed to be in captivity.
