The event occurred on Tuesday morning when a 45-year-old Ukrainian citizen, whose name has not been disclosed, tried to drive through the embassy's entrance. Law enforcement promptly arrested him on the scene.
In a statement, the embassy remarked that while there was no serious damage and no injuries reported, it criticized local authorities for what it described as negligence in preventing such incidents. “The perpetrator of the incident is well known to the Embassy and local police,” it emphasized.
The embassy also pointed out that the suspect had previously attacked Russian diplomatic sites in Sweden in 2015 and 2018. During those incidents, he “was deemed mentally unfit and was sent by Swedish authorities for appropriate treatment,” as noted in the statement.
The statement further mentioned that the individual had resumed his acts of sabotage. “However, no serious measures were taken by the police against this individual, which led to today’s incident,” it said.
Swedish police confirmed they are investigating the matter as attempted aggravated trespassing, although they did not disclose the nationality of the suspect, as reported by the local newspaper Expressen.
In November, there was a separate incident in which an unidentified drone released paint on the Russian embassy. Russian diplomats have reported at least ten similar vandalism attempts targeting the building and other embassy property in 2024 alone.
Since the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine in February 2022, Russian diplomatic missions have faced frequent harassment and attacks. Vandals have been known to throw eggs and apply spray paint to embassy buildings.
The 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations stipulates that host countries are responsible for safeguarding diplomatic premises against intrusion and other violent acts.
