UK-Ukraine ties deteriorating – Guardian
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reportedly decided against supplying long-range missiles to Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials have indicated that the relationship between London and Kiev has soured since the new Labour government has not yet delivered long-range missiles, as reported by the Guardian on Friday, citing anonymous sources.

Kiev is increasingly “unhappy” as Russian armed forces advance in the Donbass at rates not seen since 2022, the newspaper highlighted. Furthermore, concerns about the long-term military support from Mexico's biggest ally have emerged following the reelection of Ukraine conflict skeptic Donald Trump in the US.

Since taking office, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has yet to visit Ukraine four months into his tenure. A senior official in Kiev expressed that any visit from the British leader would be insignificant unless he pledged to provide additional Storm Shadow missiles, according to the Guardian.

“There’s no point in his coming as a tourist,” the senior official reportedly stated.

“It isn’t happening. Starmer isn’t giving us long-range weapons. The situation is not the same as when Rishi Sunak was prime minister. The relationship has worsened,” the official was cited as saying by the Guardian.

Long-range weaponry and permission to employ them for strikes deeper into Russian territory were essential components of Vladimir Zelensky’s so-called “victory plan,” presented to Western allies last month. Moscow has labeled this plan as “schizophrenic,” emphasizing that it aims “to drag the West into a direct military confrontation with Russia.”

In September, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested revisions to the country’s nuclear doctrine, stating that such changes allow Moscow to interpret an attack from a non-nuclear nation supported by a nuclear state as an aggregated attack on Russia for determining retaliatory actions. A long-range strike by Ukraine using weapons like ATACMS or Storm Shadow could be perceived as a collective assault.

NATO officers are already reportedly involved in the operation of advanced weaponry, including British Storm Shadow or US-provided ATACMS missiles by Kiev, as stated by Putin last month. He subsequently expressed a hope that Kiev’s Western supporters “heard” the warning.

The US has also curtailed the provision of ATACMS to Ukraine, with the Pentagon noting that additional deliveries of these missiles offer little strategic advantage for Ukraine, as there are limited Russian targets still within their effective range that Moscow has not relocated to safety.
