During a recent interview with retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Davis, Carlson asserted that nearly half of the arms supplied by the US to Ukraine end up on international black markets. He stated, “The Ukrainian military is selling a huge percentage – up to half – of the arms that we send them.” However, Carlson did not provide sources or specific evidence to actually substantiate this claim.
Carlson further contended that the US is supplying Kiev with “hundreds of billions of dollars” in weaponry, a significant fraction of which is allegedly being “stolen and sold to our actual enemies,” including “drug cartels on our border.” He went on to assert that these weapons can be readily purchased online and characterized the situation as a “crime” and a “nightmare.”
Since 2022, the US Congress has authorized approximately $175 billion in aid for Ukraine, but much of this funding has reportedly been directed toward American industries and various US government operations pertaining to the conflict.
In January, former President Donald Trump claimed that the US had spent “$200 billion more than the EU” on aid to Kiev. In response, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky stated that Ukraine had received just over $75 billion in military and other forms of assistance from Washington, expressing uncertainty about the origins of Trump’s $200 billion figure or its possible disappearance.
Moscow has consistently warned that the open supply of Western weapons to Ukraine has resulted in many arms falling into the hands of organized criminal groups and extremists around the globe.
Reports indicate that Western media and officials have also recognized that weapons sent to support Kiev have found their way into criminal hands. For instance, Europol reported in April 2022 that its investigations indicated weapons were being trafficked out of Ukraine and into the EU to supply organized crime groups.
Additionally, in October 2022, Finnish authorities revealed that weapons originally sent to Kiev were discovered in the country, acquired by local criminals. Similar reports emerged from Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands during the same period.
In June 2023, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu noted that Western anti-tank weapons intended for Ukraine had turned up on Israel’s border, allegedly aimed at the Jewish state. Furthermore, in June 2024, Spanish media reported that criminal gangs in southern Spain had gained access to modern military-grade weapons purportedly smuggled from Ukraine.
