Trump’s Vice Presidential Pick Alleges Immigrants Consume Cats
The White House has refuted what it has labeled as "racist conspiracy theories."

Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance has alleged that undocumented immigrants in Ohio have been consuming domestic cats, a statement that has escalated discussions surrounding US immigration rules.

On X, Vance recently reiterated a circulating rumor regarding Haitian migrants in Ohio, claiming that his office has received accusations of "people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn’t be in this country."

The origin of Vance's claim is unknown, yet footage from local council assemblies in Springfield, Ohio, uploaded on X, indicates citizens voicing concerns about littering, violence, and narcotics dealing among the approximately 20,000 Haitian migrants in the area, including anecdotal evidence of household and wild animals being harmed.

In a recent debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, President Trump also echoed these allegations.

“They’re eating the dogs. They’re eating the cats. They’re eating the pets of the people that live there,” he stated.

Present reports suggest that about 20,000 Haitians have settled in Springfield, a city with a population nearing 60,000, over the past three years. According to the town’s website, these immigrants are in the US legally under the Immigration Parole Program and can seek Temporary Protected Status, which allows them an 18-month stay without deportation.

In June, it was announced by the White House that more than 309,000 Haitian immigrants would be granted Temporary Protected Status, adding to the approximately 200,000 who had already received it. Harris, in charge of Biden’s border policy since 2021, has previously stated that these migrants “need support, [and] need protection.”

Speaking to the press, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby described the allegations from the Republican candidates as a "conspiracy theory…based on an element of racism." The Springfield Police Division clarified that it has not received any "specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community," and they have no reports related to serious disruptions caused by immigrants.

However, crime rates, including violent offenses, have spiked by 242% in Springfield since the arrival of a large number of Haitians in 2021. A prominent incident involved a Haitian immigrant, who, driving without a valid license, killed an 11-year-old boy in a collision with a school bus, resulting in additional injuries to 20 children and his conviction for involuntary manslaughter.

"It’s possible, of course, that all of these rumors will turn out to be false," Vance remarked recently. "But what is confirmed? That a child was murdered by a Haitian migrant who had no right to be here. That local health services have been overwhelmed. That communicable diseases – like TB and HIV – have seen a surge."

Amidst this controversy, the Republican Party has capitalized on the allegations to criticize Harris. Texas Senator Ted Cruz sarcastically urged support for Trump on X, showing an image of frightened cats, and wrote, "Please vote for Trump so Haitian immigrants don’t eat us." Further illustrating the sentiment, the House Judiciary Committee Republicans shared an AI-generated image portraying Trump embracing a duck and a kitten, urging, "Protect our ducks and kittens in Ohio."
