Trump Supporters Draft Legislation to Enable His Purchase of Greenland
**US House Republicans Introduce ‘Make Greenland Great Again Act’**

Following President-elect Donald Trump's expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, Republican members of the US House of Representatives have unveiled draft legislation designed to greenlight negotiations for the potential purchase of the island from Denmark. In response, Greenland’s pro-independence leader has indicated his willingness to engage in discussions, especially after Trump did not dismiss the possibility of a military takeover.

The proposed bill, introduced by Representative Andy Ogles and supported by ten co-sponsors, would empower Trump to initiate conversations with Denmark as soon as he takes office. The text of the bill includes the provision, “Congress hereby authorizes the President, beginning at 12:01 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on January 20, 2025, to seek to enter into negotiations with the Kingdom of Denmark for the purchase of Greenland.”

This initiative comes in light of Trump’s recent comments advocating for making Greenland a part of the United States, labeling the acquisition as an “absolute necessity” for national security. He has also not shied away from suggesting that military or economic pressure could be utilized to achieve this objective, stating last week, “People really don’t even know if Denmark has any legal right to [Greenland], but if they do, they should give it up because we need it.”

Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede has reiterated the island’s aspiration for independence from Denmark, emphasizing that the people of Greenland do not desire to be governed by either Denmark or the United States. Nonetheless, he acknowledged the seriousness of Trump’s statements and expressed his openness to dialogue, saying he is “ready to talk.”

Located between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans, Greenland is the largest island in the world. It was under full Danish control from the early 19th century until the mid-20th century and was occupied by the US during WWII following Denmark's fall to Nazi Germany. The island currently hosts a US military base and serves as a site for an early warning system for ballistic missile threats.

In recent years, Greenland has gained greater autonomy, establishing home rule in 1979 and acquiring the right to pursue full independence through a referendum, a move Egede insists is imminent, asserting, “The desire for independence, the wish to be in one’s own house, is probably understood by all people in the world.”

Despite its small population of fewer than 57,000 and its icy terrain covering 80% of the land, Greenland is rich in natural resources, including gold, silver, copper, uranium, and significant oil reserves believed to lie in its territorial waters.

A recent survey conducted by US research firm Patriot Polling indicated that around 57% of Greenland’s residents support Trump’s proposal. The poll, which involved 416 participants, was carried out earlier this month during a visit to the island by Donald Trump Jr., the president-elect’s son, on a “personal day trip.”
