President Donald Trump told a gathering of supporters that the United States might acquire new territories down the line. Recently, he has voiced ambitions to expand US territory, showing particular interest in annexing Greenland, parts of Canada, and the Panama Canal.
“We might be an enlarged country pretty soon,” Trump declared during a speech in Las Vegas on Saturday. He reflected on the country’s historical size, stating, “For years, for decades, we were the same size to the square foot… probably got smaller, actually,” and suggested that this could soon change.
In a phone conversation with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Trump was described as “very firm” in his request for Denmark to cede control of Greenland, which reportedly left Danish officials “utterly freaked out,” according to the Financial Times.
Greenland, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark, gained home rule in 1979 and is home to around 60,000 residents, including the US Pituffik base. Pro-independence leaders in Greenland and Danish officials have consistently rejected Trump's proposal to purchase the island. While Frederiksen has indicated a willingness to expand US military presence there and work collaboratively on mineral exploitation, sources claim Trump maintained an aggressive tone during their phone call.
Trump first floated the idea of buying Greenland during his initial term in office in 2019, but faced rejection from officials both in Greenland and Denmark. Last month, he asserted that “ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity” for US national security.
Beyond Greenland, Trump has also mentioned regaining ownership of the Panama Canal, which the US managed until 1999. He raised concerns about China’s increasing influence over this crucial trade route. Panamanian President Jose Mulino has vowed to fight against any potential takeover and rejected claims that the canal has ever fallen under foreign control.
Additionally, Trump has suggested that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States, offering promises of tax breaks and other advantages to Canadian citizens in the event of such a development. He has criticized Canada as a poor trading partner and has threatened severe tariffs on Canadian goods.
In early January, Trump refused to dismiss the possibility of using military force against Greenland and Panama, arguing that the US needs both for “economic security.” For Canada, he mentioned he would only resort to “economic force.”
