Shortly after Gaetz's withdrawal, President-elect Donald Trump announced his new nominee for the Justice Department: former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi. The announcement, made via social media on Thursday, followed Gaetz’s decision to withdraw from the nomination process.
“For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans – Not anymore,” Trump stated on his Truth Social platform. He expressed confidence in Bondi, describing her as “smart and tough” and an “AMERICA FIRST Fighter.”
Bondi held the position of Florida’s attorney general from 2011 to 2019 and was previously part of a Trump-led commission that aimed to tackle the opioid crisis and address drug addiction. Trump commended her work against drug trafficking, emphasizing the significance of these issues under her prospective leadership.
In reaction to Trump’s announcement, Gaetz took to social media platform X to commend Bondi, labeling her "a stellar selection."
A week prior, Gaetz had been nominated by Trump, but opted to withdraw, citing that his confirmation process might serve as a “distraction” for the incoming administration. Senate approval is necessary for presidential cabinet picks, and Gaetz was facing considerable resistance, not just from Democrats, but also from some Republicans.
The former congressman has been at the center of controversy due to allegations concerning inappropriate conduct with underage individuals, which he has denied. While the Justice Department closed its investigation without filing charges, the House Ethics Committee is still assessing the situation, reportedly influenced by California Congressman Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted from the speaker’s seat last year with Gaetz's support.
