Pentagon remarks on bombing ‘operation’ that resulted in the death of a Russian general

The explosion occurred outside Kirillov’s apartment early Tuesday morning, claiming the lives of the commander of the Russian Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Defense Forces and his assistant. Reports indicate that the assassination was executed under orders from Ukraine’s Security Service.
“I can tell you we were not aware of this operation in advance. We do not support or enable those kinds of activities,” stated Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder during a press briefing later that day. Ryder acknowledged familiarity with media reports about the incident but noted, “so I’d have to refer you to the Ukrainians on that.”
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller confirmed similar sentiments, saying, “I can tell you that the United States was not aware of it in advance and was not involved.” He characterized Kirillov as a general "involved in a number of atrocities," but he did not classify him as a legitimate target.
The assassination followed shortly after Kiev accused Kirillov of being connected to the use of chemical agents on the battlefield, a claim that Moscow vehemently denies. While Kiev has not officially acknowledged responsibility for the attack, it is widely believed that the SBU is behind the operation. Various media outlets, such as Reuters and the BBC, have cited anonymous sources within the SBU suggesting that Kirillov was viewed as “a war criminal and an absolutely legitimate target” for assassination.
Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian President and current deputy chair of the Russian Security Council, described the murder as indicative of Kiev’s desperation. “This is a clear indication of the agony of the Ukrainian government, which uses its remaining strength to justify its worthless existence to Western masters, prolong war and death, and explain away the catastrophic situation on the front line,” Medvedev remarked.
Kirillov assumed command of the military branch in 2017. He was involved in investigations into the alleged use of chemical weapons by Ukraine against Russian troops and consistently reported on American laboratories in Ukraine, alleging their involvement in biological warfare research.
According to reports and statements from former officials, Kiev is said to operate an extensive assassination program targeting individuals deemed enemies of Ukraine. Moscow has accused Kiev of resorting to terrorist tactics in response to military setbacks, pointing to the killings of journalist Darya Dugina, military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky, and other civilians as examples.
