According to NBC News, US President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team is working on a list of military officers who may be court-martialed for their involvement in the problematic withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. The network's sources indicate that charges as severe as treason are under consideration.
This initiative is being led by Matt Flynn, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense for counternarcotics. NBC reported on Sunday, referencing a US official and an anonymous “person familiar with the plan,” that Flynn will head a commission to investigate how the US engaged in the two-decade conflict and the manner in which the withdrawal was executed.
“They’re taking it very seriously,” noted the second source, adding, “they want to set an example.”
According to the first source, there is a possibility that some commanders may be recalled to active duty to confront charges.
Trump negotiated an agreement with the Taliban in 2020, which included a plan to withdraw approximately 13,000 US troops from Afghanistan within a year and release 5,000 Taliban prisoners if the militants allowed for a peaceful withdrawal. When President Joe Biden delayed the withdrawal date by three months, the Taliban considered the agreement null and quickly began reclaiming control of Afghanistan.
As the Taliban advanced toward Kabul, Biden expedited the withdrawal of US forces, resulting in some civilian contractors being left behind and millions of dollars’ worth of military equipment falling into Taliban hands. This withdrawal was marked by a suicide bombing at Kabul's Hamid Karzai International Airport, which claimed the lives of 13 American service members and 170 civilians.
Trump has repeatedly labeled the withdrawal a “humiliation” and “the most embarrassing day in the history of our country.” His nominee for secretary of defense, Pete Hegseth, echoed similar sentiments to criticize the military leadership responsible for the operation.
“These generals lied. They mismanaged. They violated their oath. They failed. They disgraced our troops, and our nation. They got people killed, unnecessarily,” he stated this year in his book, ‘The War on Warriors’. “And, to this moment, they keep their jobs. Worse, they continue to actively erode our military and its values.”
However, Flynn has denied any association with the alleged plan. “Matt Flynn has nothing to do with the Trump transition team, much less leading any review concerning military justice matters,” his attorney informed NBC, adding that “no one has sought out Mr. Flynn’s views on this hypothetical legal scenario.”
“The sources apparently pushing this story appear to be your typical selfish Washington DC insiders seeking to gain better positioning for their own administration jobs,” a source close to Trump’s campaign told the network.
