Moscow and Washington are working towards creating the necessary conditions for a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart, Donald Trump. Ushakov, who is Putin's top foreign policy aide, made these remarks following high-level discussions between Russia and the US in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.
The Riyadh discussions marked the first meeting of this nature since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, focusing on normalizing relations between the two nations and establishing a foundation for peace talks regarding the Ukraine conflict.
Ushakov indicated that the delegations explored the prospect of a meeting between Putin and Trump. When asked about a previous report from Bloomberg suggesting the leaders might meet as early as next week, Ushakov responded, "That is unlikely." He emphasized the need for both countries to engage in intensive discussions before a presidential meeting could take place.
“We are ready for [that work] but at the moment it’s too early to talk about specific dates,” Ushakov remarked.
US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz has also noted that there is no confirmed date for a meeting between Trump and Putin, while both parties are keen to facilitate such an encounter.
After speaking with Putin last week, Trump mentioned that he could “probably” meet in person with his Russian counterpart soon, hinting that Saudi Arabia might be a possible location for the meeting.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov earlier stated that there are currently no details regarding a potential meeting between the two leaders, highlighting that thorough preparation is essential before it can take place.
