Trump urges California governor to step down
The incoming US president has charged California Governor Gavin Newsom with prioritizing “worthless fish” over human lives due to his water policies.

US President-elect Donald Trump has called for Newsom to resign in light of the catastrophic wildfires sweeping through California, which he claims resulted from the governor's water policies.

The wildfires, which ignited earlier in the week, have devastated the state, claiming at least five lives and prompting the evacuation of over 100,000 residents. Officials report that the fires have scorched more than 20,000 acres, affecting affluent regions in Los Angeles County and damaging or destroying upwards of 2,000 structures, including homes and businesses. Some firefighters have faced challenges due to insufficient water supply in hydrants.

On Truth Social, Trump expressed his frustration with Newsom and reiterated his call for the governor to resign. He stated, “Governor Gavin Newscum refused to sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water, from excess rain and snowmelt from the North, to flow daily into many parts of California, including the areas that are currently burning in a virtually apocalyptic way.”

He further criticized Newsom for his environmental priorities, saying, “He wanted to protect an essentially worthless fish called a smelt, by giving it less water, but didn’t care about the people of California. Now the ultimate price is being paid.”

Trump also directed criticism at President Joe Biden amidst the crisis, saying, “NO WATER IN THE FIRE HYDRANTS, NO MONEY IN FEMA. THIS IS WHAT JOE BIDEN IS LEAVING ME. THANKS JOE!”

In response to Trump's accusations, Newsom’s director of communications, Izzy Gardon, dismissed the claims, asserting that Trump was “playing politics” during a time of crisis. Gardon emphasized, “The Governor is focused on protecting people, not playing politics, and making sure firefighters have all the resources they need.”

In response to the wildfires, Newsom has declared a state of emergency, while Biden has canceled a trip to Italy to oversee the federal response in the coming days.

The areas most affected by the fires include Pacific Palisades, Altadena, Pasadena, San Fernando Valley, and Sepulveda Basin. Several homes belonging to high-profile individuals, such as Paris Hilton, Anthony Hopkins, Mandy Moore, and Leighton Meester, have been destroyed.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that another fire has erupted near Runyon Canyon, dangerously close to iconic landmarks like the Hollywood Bowl and Hollywood Walk of Fame, putting tourist attractions such as the TCL Chinese Theatre and Madame Tussauds Wax Museum at risk.
