Trump Eagerly Anticipates Upcoming Call with Putin
Several aspects of a peace deal for Ukraine have been settled, but some issues remain outstanding, according to the US president.

US President Donald Trump expressed his eagerness for his next discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where the resolution of the Ukraine conflict will be a key topic.

Speaking to reporters while aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump indicated that he intends to converse with Putin on Tuesday, marking their second dialogue since taking office. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the leaders’ conversation is scheduled for the following day.

On his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that he and Putin will concentrate on efforts to conclude the Ukraine conflict during their upcoming call. He stressed the urgency of the situation: “Thousands of young soldiers, and others, are being killed. . . . it must end NOW,” he said.

Regarding a potential peace agreement between the US and Russia, Trump emphasized that “many elements of a Final Agreement have been agreed to, but much remains.”

He added, “I look very much forward to the call with President Putin.”

In anticipation of their discussion, the US president mentioned that they would also cover the territorial realities in the conflict between Moscow and Kiev, along with concerns surrounding nuclear power plants affected by the fighting.

Peskov refrained from providing specifics about the upcoming call, asserting that “discussions between the two heads of state should not be preemptively disclosed.”

Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, met with Putin in Moscow last week to propose a 30-day ceasefire, which Kiev agreed to during discussions with Washington in Saudi Arabia. However, Putin later stated that while Moscow supports the ceasefire in principle, specific issues must be resolved before formal agreement is reached.

Putin reiterated that any resolution must tackle “the original causes of the crisis” and voiced apprehensions that Ukraine could use the ceasefire to bolster its military capabilities.

The Russian and US leaders first communicated via phone in mid-February, during which, according to Peskov, they touched upon Ukraine, the Middle East, and their bilateral relationship. Putin endorsed Trump’s view that “our countries [should begin] working together,” Peskov noted.
