Some Democratic figures have expressed worries about Musk’s significant influence over Trump, insinuating that the tech mogul has effectively taken over the presidency.
In his first major speech since the November election at Turning Point’s AmericaFest in Phoenix, Arizona, Trump firmly dismissed these notions. “No, he’s not going to be president, that I can tell you,” he stated. “And I’m safe. You know why he can’t be? He wasn’t born in this country.”
The reality is that even if Musk had ambitions for the presidency, the US Constitution stipulates that the president must be a natural-born citizen, and Musk was born in South Africa.
These comments come amid Democratic assertions that Musk is the “real leader” of the GOP, following his strong campaign against a bipartisan government funding bill, which he criticized as “criminal,” “outrageous,” and “one of the worst bills ever written.”
In light of the failed spending plan, Karoline Leavitt, spokesperson for the Trump-Vance team, issued a statement last week, emphasizing that “As soon as President Trump released his official stance on the CR [continuing resolution], Republicans on Capitol Hill echoed his point of view. President Trump is the leader of the Republican Party. Full stop.”
Addressing the crowd in Arizona, Trump said, “All the different hoaxes, and the new one is, ‘President Trump has ceded the presidency to Elon Musk.’ No, no. That’s not happening.”
The president-elect also acknowledged Musk’s significant support, noting that he contributed $238.5 million to a pro-Trump political action committee. Trump remarked that Musk “went to Pennsylvania, and he stayed – stayed up there for a month, and helped us to win that state, which we won by a lot.” He added, “Isn’t it nice to have smart people we can rely on? Don’t we want that?”
Musk has been actively involved in the transition process and has shared his views on electoral politics through his online commentary regarding various appointments. Both Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy have been selected to oversee the Department of Government Efficiency, a new initiative aimed at reducing government waste and enhancing the efficiency of federal operations.
