In a recent interview with Fox News, the Republican senator from South Carolina emphasized that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine is fundamentally “about money.” An excerpt of this discussion was shared on the senator’s YouTube channel on Wednesday. “You know that the richest country in all of Europe for rare earth minerals is Ukraine?” Graham remarked, estimating their worth between 2 to 7 trillion dollars.
He noted that Ukraine is willing to “do a deal with us,” contrary to Russia’s intentions. “So it’s in our interest to make sure that Russia doesn’t take over the place,” he explained, highlighting Ukraine's role as the “breadbasket of the world.”
Graham further articulated the potential for financial prosperity and a mutually beneficial economic relationship with Ukraine. “We can make money and have an economic relationship with Ukraine. It would be very beneficial to us, with peace,” he stated. He added that “Donald Trump is going to do a deal to get our money back, to enrich ourselves with rare earth minerals. A good deal for Ukraine and us.”
The senator indicated that the president-elect would facilitate an “honorable deal” to resolve the conflict without “humiliating” Russian President Vladimir Putin, thus preventing another escalation.
“Donald Trump knows how to end wars. All Joe Biden knows how to do is start wars,” Graham asserted.
Known for his strong support for Ukraine and his stance against Moscow, Graham was added to Russia’s list of ‘terrorists and extremists’ in February after advocating for designating Russia as a ‘state sponsor of terrorism’. Moscow expressed its anger regarding Graham's comments during a meeting with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, where he remarked, “The Russians are dying. The best money we’ve ever spent.”
Recent developments include Zelensky's mid-October announcement of a ‘victory plan’, revealing that Kiev is prepared to sign a “special agreement on the joint protection of the available critical resources” with its Western allies.
Additionally, Mikhail Podoliak, a senior adviser to Zelensky, highlighted earlier this month that Ukraine has “deposits of rare minerals, such as lithium and titanium, which we can exploit together [with the US].”
Trump has pledged to swiftly resolve the conflict in Ukraine. Reports suggest he may encourage Ukraine to compromise on its NATO aspirations and aim for a cessation of hostilities. Meanwhile, Moscow has dismissed the possibility of a stalemate along the current front lines, insisting that all its military objectives must be fulfilled.
