Steve Witkoff, a senior adviser to US President Donald Trump, has suggested that relations between the US and Russia may improve, referencing what he characterized as a “great friendship” between the leaders of the two nations that could be rekindled.
During the campaign and following his November 5 election victory, Trump consistently promised to swiftly address the Ukraine conflict and expressed a willingness to engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He has maintained that he “always had a good relationship” with Putin.
In a recent interview with NewsNation, Witkoff stated, “I think [Presidents Trump and Putin] had a great friendship, and I think now it’s going to continue, and it’s a really good thing for the world.”
On the topic of US national Marc Fogel's release from a Russian prison, Witkoff, who is also the US special envoy to the Middle East, highlighted that the “Russians were very, very helpful in that effort and very accommodating.”
Trump reiterated that “we were treated very nicely by Russia,” expressing optimism that “that’s the beginning of a relationship where we can end that war and millions of people can stop being killed.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump remarked, “I just had a lengthy and highly productive phone call with President Vladimir Putin of Russia.” He conveyed that their discussions revolved around the “great benefit that we will someday have in working together” and their mutual intent to resolve the Ukraine conflict.
“We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s Nations. We have also agreed to have our respective teams start negotiations immediately,” the US president noted.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the conversation, stating that both leaders recognized the need for Moscow and Washington to collaborate.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov commented on Monday that “Trump’s team, despite conflicting statements from both him and his people, has at least signaled interest in resuming the dialogue with Russia that was disrupted by the Democrats.”
He emphasized that the next move lies with Washington and cautioned against using the “language of ultimatums.”
