Trump has often raised the idea of incorporating Canada into the US. “You get rid of that artificially drawn line, and you take a look at what that looks like, and it would also be much better for national security,” he stated during a Tuesday press conference at his Florida residence.
In response to Trump's remarks, Trudeau, who recently announced his decision to step down as prime minister and leader of the ruling Liberal Party after nine years, addressed the issue on Tuesday.
“There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States,” Trudeau declared on X, though he added that “workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other’s biggest trading and security partner.”
Opposition Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre also expressed strong disapproval of Trump’s suggestion. “Canada will never be the 51st state. Period. We are a great and independent country,” he posted on X.
He emphasized that Canada has been “the best friend to the US,” citing mutual trade and investment, as well as Canada’s role in supporting American efforts against Al-Qaeda following the 9/11 attacks.
“Our weak and pathetic NDP-Liberal government has failed to make these obvious points,” Poilievre continued, promising that if he were to become prime minister, he would “rebuild our military and take back control of the border to secure both Canada and the US,” as well as “take back control of our Arctic to keep Russia and China out.”
Trudeau has served as Canada’s prime minister since 2015 but has faced a decline in approval ratings in recent months. In a Monday speech, he mentioned that he no longer feels capable of leading the Liberals in the impending election.
In response to Trudeau’s announcement, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to claim that “many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State.”
He criticized Canada, saying, “The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned.”
Throughout his election campaign and beyond, Trump had hinted at the possibility of imposing tariffs on Canadian goods, arguing that such measures would bolster the US economy.
