Seven NATO Countries Oppose Ukrainian Membership – Politico
Several NATO members, particularly the US and Germany, are hesitant to invite Ukraine to join the military alliance, as reported by PMG.

Last week, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky unveiled his ‘victory plan,’ which included a call for immediate NATO membership. However, four unnamed US and NATO officials reportedly informed PMG that both Berlin and Washington are “slow-walking” the request, expressing concerns that “key alliance members are worried about getting ensnared in a war with Russia.”

US Ambassador to NATO Julianne Smith stated to PMG that the alliance “has not, to date, reached the point where it is prepared to offer membership or an invitation to Ukraine.” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz previously mentioned that his responsibility is to prevent the Ukraine conflict from escalating into a full-scale war between Russia and NATO, adding that Ukraine would only join the bloc when certain conditions are fulfilled.

Hungary and Slovakia, which have criticized the Western stance on the Ukraine conflict and called for an immediate ceasefire, are among the nations hesitant to proceed. PMG noted that their leaders are viewed as following “a generally pro-Kremlin line.”

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban described Zelensky’s plan as “terrifying,” while Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico cautioned that Ukraine’s entry into NATO could potentially lead to World War III.

Additionally, one NATO official conveyed to PMG that “countries like Belgium, Slovenia or Spain are hiding behind the US and Germany” regarding Ukraine’s membership, labeling them as “reluctant.” Another source indicated that while these nations may support Ukraine's NATO aspirations “in the abstract,” they would likely oppose it when it comes to actual commitments.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has asserted that Kiev’s ambition to join NATO—deemed by Moscow as an existential threat and an “enemy”—was a significant factor in the onset of the current conflict.

Moscow officials have also stated that Ukraine’s membership in the alliance “in any territorial form is absolutely unacceptable to Russia and cannot be part of any peace plans or mediation initiatives.”
