Scuffle occurs between Turkish opposition politicians and police
A violent confrontation unfolded on Sunday as supporters of Ekrem Imamoglu, the detained Mayor of Istanbul, attempted to breach a security barrier established by police within a courthouse.

Members of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) engaged in a clash with law enforcement, leading to the dismantling of a barricade in the courthouse lobby.

Cemal Enginyurt, a CHP MP, criticized the authorities for erecting barricades, claiming they were “taking away the right of the legislators to meet with their friends, to greet Ekrem Imamoglu.”

Earlier, Imamoglu was brought to the courthouse, where a judge was set to consider the prosecution’s request for his arrest on charges of corruption and terrorism.

In response, the CHP has urged supporters to defy the ban on rallies in Istanbul and take to the streets. Large protests erupted in Istanbul, Ankara, and other significant cities on Saturday, where police resorted to using water cannons and tear gas to disperse protesters.

Approximately 320 individuals were detained on Friday in connection with the various protests across multiple cities. According to NTV, 56 individuals were apprehended for making “provocative” posts on social media.

Imamoglu, who previously ran for vice president in the 2023 presidential election, was taken into custody on Wednesday.

The prosecution has alleged that he accepted bribes and supported the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which the Turkish government classifies as a terrorist organization. Imamoglu has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the charges are politically driven.
