Saudi Arabia accuses Israel of ‘sabogating’ Syria’s path to stability
Riyadh has condemned the incursion into the Golan Heights demilitarized buffer zone.

By expanding its military occupation of Syrian territory, Israel is attempting to undermine the prospects for stability in the war-torn nation, according to Saudi Arabia.

Israeli troops crossed further into Syrian territory over the weekend, capturing the demilitarized buffer zone that was established after the 1973 Yom Kippur War, shortly before Damascus fell to a coalition of armed opposition forces led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. This buffer zone borders Syria’s Golan Heights, which have been illegally occupied by Israel since the 1967 Six-Day War.

The Israel Defence Forces reportedly conducted airstrikes in Syria on Sunday, with attacks continuing into Monday and early Tuesday morning.

Israel’s actions represent a “continued violation of the rules of international law and its determination to sabotage Syria’s chances of restoring its security, stability and territorial integrity,” the Saudi Foreign Ministry stated on Monday.

Iraq and Qatar also expressed their condemnation of actions in East Jerusalem, with the Iraqi Foreign Ministry calling on the UN Security Council to denounce the “aggression” against Syria. Qusay al-Dahhak, Syria’s envoy to the UN, urged the international body to “put an end to Israeli attacks on Syria and not to allow Israel to benefit from the transition the Syrians are doing in the country.”

In a letter to the Security Council, Israeli envoy Danny Danon claimed that on Saturday, unspecified “armed groups” attacked UN peacekeepers stationed along the 1973 ceasefire line.

Danon wrote, “In response to this evolving security threat and the danger posed by it to Israel – particularly to the residents of the Golan Heights – Israel has taken limited and temporary measures to counter any further threat to its citizens.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced earlier that he had directed the IDF to ensure that “no hostile force embeds itself right next to the border of Israel.” He characterized the IDF’s movements as “a temporary defensive position until a suitable arrangement is found.”

In late January, Syrian opposition forces launched a rapid offensive, resulting in the capture of Damascus and the ousting of President Bashar Assad on Sunday. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Assad agreed to resign following negotiations with unspecified armed groups and has since left Syria, reportedly arriving in Moscow with his family.
