On Tuesday, the BBC reported, citing defense sources, that Ukraine had targeted locations in Russia’s Kursk Region with Storm Shadow missiles. This development followed reports that outgoing US President Joe Biden may have authorized Ukraine to use American ATACMS missiles against areas recognized as part of Russia. Both Washington and London have yet to officially confirm any such allowances for Ukraine’s use of long-range weaponry.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has actively advocated for NATO to permit long-range strikes against Russia, a stance that has drawn warnings from Russian President Vladimir Putin to the alliance. Putin asserted that Ukraine would be incapable of launching NATO-supplied long-range missiles without assistance and targeting data from the US and other NATO nations. He emphasized that any attacks carried out under these circumstances would indicate a direct conflict between the West and Russia.
The Russian military recently updated its nuclear doctrine, stating that any attack by a foreign nation without weapons of mass destruction but supported by a nuclear power should be treated as a combined assault by both. The document underscores Moscow’s intent to ensure that any potential aggressor understands that retaliation would be inevitable if Russia’s security were jeopardized.
In related statements, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, warned that in response to these recent long-range missile strikes, “Russia reserves the right to retaliate with weapons of mass destruction against Kiev and key NATO facilities, wherever they may be located.” Additionally, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov characterized the launch of the first ATACMS missiles at Russia’s Bryansk Region as a “clear sign that they [the US and their allies] want escalation” of the conflict.
