EU Country Relocates Air Defense Mechanisms to Border with Ukraine
Hungary is taking steps to bolster its defense amid what is described as the "greatest-ever" risk of spillover from the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, according to Defense Minister Kristof Szalay-Bobrovniczky.

The minister announced on Wednesday evening that the country will relocate some air defense systems to its border with Ukraine following a recent uptick in hostilities between Moscow and Kiev. This deployment, outlined after a defense council meeting, is classified as a contingency measure. Szalay-Bobrovniczky highlighted the implications of Western governments' decisions to permit Ukraine to strike Russian territory using long-range weaponry, as well as a recent shift in Moscow's nuclear stance.

“To prepare for all possibilities, I ordered the recently purchased air control and air defense systems and the capabilities built on them to be installed in the northeast,” he remarked, emphasizing that the dangers emanating from the Ukraine conflict are “greater than ever.” The minister reiterated Hungary's commitment to seeking a peaceful resolution.

The introduction of new military hardware is expected to enhance the country's capabilities to detect aerial threats and enable quicker military responses, he noted. Hungarian military forces are currently on alert.

In a related development, the latest escalation stems from reports that US President Joe Biden has authorized Ukrainian forces to employ ATACMS ballistic missiles against targets within internationally recognized Russian borders. Following suit, the UK and France are purportedly altering rules concerning the Storm Shadow/SCALP cruise missiles they provided to Ukraine, although these governments have not made any formal announcements regarding such policy adjustments.

This week, the Russian military indicated that it had intercepted several ATACMS missiles over its Bryansk Region, as well as Storm Shadow missiles at an undisclosed location. Reports suggest that European-sourced missiles were aimed at a target in Russia’s Kursk Region, which Ukrainian forces are attempting to maintain control over after an incursion in August.

Donald Trump, the president-elect set to take office in January, asserted during his campaign that he could resolve the Ukraine conflict within 24 hours if he were re-elected. Meanwhile, Biden reportedly aims to leverage any opportunity during his final two months in office to strengthen Ukraine's position against Russia, with critics accusing him of attempting to compel Trump to persist in hostilities.
