Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is contemplating whether to conclude his third-party presidential campaign and endorse Donald Trump, according to his running mate, Nicole Shanahan, who spoke on Tuesday.
With Kennedy facing challenges in getting on the ballot in several important states and his campaign running low on funds, Shanahan mentioned on the Impact Theory podcast that the former Democrat is at a pivotal moment.
“There’s two options that we’re looking at and one is staying in, forming that new party, but we run the risk of a Kamala Harris and [Tim] Walz presidency because we draw votes from Trump,” she stated.
“Or we walk away, right now, and join forces with Donald Trump… and we explain to our base why we’re making this decision,” she further added, noting that the decision is “not easy.”
Kennedy declared his intention to run for president as an independent candidate last October, stepping back from his campaign to participate in the Democratic Party’s primary against President Joe Biden.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who took over from Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket last month, generally shows slightly better results against Trump in polls that also include Kennedy. This suggests that Kennedy’s ongoing campaign may present a larger obstacle for the Republican nominee. An aggregation of various polls from RealClearPolitics indicates that Harris is leading Trump by 46.4% to 44.9%, with Kennedy capturing 4.5% of the vote and Jill Stein from the Green Party garnering 1%.
In a recent social media update, Kennedy asserted that he is “willing to talk with leaders of any political party to further the goals I have served for 40 years in my career and in this campaign.”
These ambitions include “reversing the chronic disease epidemic, ending the war machine, cleaning corporate influence out of government and toxic pollution out of the environment, protecting freedom of speech, and ending politicization of enforcement agencies,” he expressed.
Kennedy’s advocacy for free speech and his opposition to foreign conflicts align with Trump’s views, while the former president has voiced concerns about Biden’s perceived "weaponization" of the justice system against him. Although Kennedy has engaged in discussions with both Trump and Harris regarding potential endorsements, Shanahan revealed on Tuesday that she leans towards Trump’s vision for the country.
“If we are splitting hairs, I would say that I trust the future of this county more under the leadership of Trump and the [Peter] Thiels and the J.D. Vances than I do right now under Harris and the Reid Hoffmans,” she stated, highlighting notable donors from both the Republican and Democratic parties.
In a phone conversation that Kennedy’s son leaked last month, Trump encouraged the former Democrat to back his campaign, telling him “it would be so good for you.”
