Pop star vows Harris will turn the entire US 'like Detroit'
At a rally promoting the Democratic candidate, Lizzo asserted that the struggling city of Detroit serves as a model for the entire nation.

The renowned artist addressed supporters in Detroit on Saturday, emphasizing her pride in the city.

Lizzo remarked, “You know, they say if Kamala Harris wins, then the whole country will be like Detroit, okay? Proud like Detroit. Resilient like Detroit.” She pointed out Detroit’s significance, highlighting its historical contributions, stating, “We’re talking about the same Detroit that innovated the auto industry and the music industry, so put some respect on Detroit’s name, okay!”

Historically, Detroit was the epicenter of America’s automobile industry and was once considered the wealthiest city in the world during the 1950s. However, the 1973 Oil Crisis and the growing popularity of imported cars severely impacted the local economy. Following the passage of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement, which facilitated the relocation of manufacturing jobs abroad, Detroit became synonymous with urban decline.

Currently, around one-third of Detroit’s population of 640,000 lives below the poverty line, and it recorded the second highest crime rate in the US as per 2019 FBI statistics.

In a recent address to the Detroit Economic Club, former President Donald Trump made a stark comparison, likening the city to a “developing nation.” He warned, “Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she’s your president. You’re going to have a mess on your hands,” in reference to Harris.

As the election approaches, Trump and Harris find themselves in a statistical dead heat in Michigan, with recent polls showing Trump leading Harris by an average of 1.2 points. Detroit, being the state's largest urban area, has long been a bastion of Democratic support. In the 2020 elections, President Joe Biden secured Michigan by a margin of just over 150,000 votes.
