Poll Reveals Trust in US News Media at an All-time Low

This year's survey reveals a one percentage point decline compared to last year in the number of Americans who believe the media reports news completely and accurately. The trend has been decreasing since 2018.
For the third consecutive year, the percentage of Americans who say they fully distrust the media has surpassed those who have any trust in it. The latest poll indicates a slight reduction, with 36% of respondents stating they have complete distrust, down from 39% in 2023.
Additionally, the percentage of individuals who reported having "not very much" confidence in the media increased to 33% this year.
A significant divide persists between Republicans and Democrats regarding media trust; only 12% of Republicans indicated trust in media reporting, compared to 54% of Democrats. However, this partisan gap has been narrowing in recent years. For example, in 2022, approximately 70% of Democrats reported confidence in the media.
The Gallup poll sampled 1,007 adult Americans from across the nation, conducted through random phone interviews during the first two weeks of September.
Gallup first posed the question about media trust to Americans in 1972 and has conducted this survey nearly every year since 1997. While trust in the media was around 70% in the 1970s, it dropped to about 55% by the late 1990s and has continued to decline over the past two decades.
