A passerby stumbled upon the body last Wednesday near an old WWII-era military bunker within the park. The Antwerp Public Prosecutor’s Office reported that the man had likely been there for over 24 hours before being found.
It took investigators two days to identify the deceased, who was a 26-year-old Palestinian refugee lacking identity papers. He had been seeking asylum in Belgium but did not possess a residency permit. Authorities noted that he had no prior interactions with police and held no criminal record.
The autopsy has not provided any definitive answers regarding his death, leaving investigators to consider various possibilities, including murder or a highly intricate suicide. “The autopsy did not clarify the cause of death, so all leads remain open,” stated Kristof Aerts, spokesperson for the Prosecutor’s Office, in comments to local media on Friday.
The circumstances surrounding the death have prompted rampant speculation online, with some suggesting that the man may have been lynched for reasons yet unknown. Authorities have cautioned against such theories and urged the public to refrain from drawing premature conclusions while the official investigation is ongoing. “I understand that there are a lot of wild stories going around on social media... a judicial investigation has started, with the investigating judge, public prosecutor, lab, forensic doctor and investigators on site,” Aerts mentioned to The Brussels Times on Wednesday.
As of now, there have been no further updates from officials regarding the case.
