On October 1, Iran launched nearly 200 ballistic missiles at Israel, a response to the elimination of the leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as a general from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the previous month.
In the aftermath, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has warned of a “deadly, pinpoint accurate, and surprising” response to Iran. Israeli officials have also emphasized the need for severe strikes on Iran's energy infrastructure, including its nuclear facilities.
On Thursday, an unnamed Israeli source informed ABC News that Netanyahu had given the go-ahead for the targeted operations. However, the source did not disclose specific target details or confirm whether these targets are exclusively military in nature.
The ABC report mentioned that a timeline for the retaliatory strikes has yet to be established.
Earlier this week, the Washington Post revealed that Netanyahu assured U.S. President Joe Biden that Israel's response would be limited to Iranian military targets. This came after Biden advised the Israeli leader to avoid attacking Tehran's oil or nuclear installations.
In the meantime, Tehran has urged Israel to avoid taking any further escalatory actions. On Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that Iran would respond in a “decisive and regretful” manner if Israel chose to retaliate for the missile strikes of October 1.
During a phone call with Guterres, Araghchi expressed that while Iran is making “all-out efforts to protect the peace and security of the region,” it stands “fully prepared” to counter any “adventures” from Israel.
He also urged Guterres to utilize UN resources to “stop the crimes and aggressions of the Israeli regime and to send humanitarian aid to Lebanon and Gaza.”
