Musk Advocates for 'Direct Democracy' on Mars
Elon Musk has shared his vision for democracy on Mars, suggesting that if the Red Planet is ever colonized by humans, its governance should reflect the desires of its inhabitants. In a post on his X platform on Sunday, he stated, “The Martians will decide how they are ruled. I recommend direct, rather than representative, democracy.”

Musk also laid out a timeline for SpaceX's missions to Mars, hinting, “Uncrewed Starships landing on Mars in ~2 years, perhaps with crewed versions passing near Mars, and crewed Starships heading there in ~4 years are all possible." For Musk, the goal of becoming a multi-planetary species is essential for the survival of humanity, and thus SpaceX is focused on transporting both cargo and people to establish foundations for permanent habitation on Mars.

In the political arena, Musk expressed his support for Donald Trump as the Republican presidential candidate in September, asserting that “we will never reach Mars” if Vice-President Kamala Harris were to win the upcoming election. He emphasized that “when it comes to getting things done, not just saying nice-sounding words, I strongly believe that Trump will do a far better job.” Ultimately, Trump won the election with a significant lead, securing 312 electoral votes compared to Harris's 226.

During his campaign, Trump vowed to “reach Mars” by 2028 if elected again, suggesting he had Musk's backing. “Elon promised me that he was going to do that,” Trump remarked at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. “We’re gonna win, and he’s gonna reach Mars by the end of our term, which is a big thing, before China, before anybody. My money’s on that guy,” he added.

In a bid to address governmental inefficiencies, Trump has appointed Musk and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a special advisory committee aimed at reducing bureaucratic obstacles and streamlining federal agencies through a new Department of Government Efficiency.
