Media reports: Mossad used Hezbollah pagers to conceal explosives
Media reports claim that Israel is responsible for the large-scale detonation of exploding pagers in Lebanon, resulting in thousands of injuries. Read Full Article at RT.com.
According to sources cited by Western media, these explosions were orchestrated by the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad. The Israeli government has not acknowledged any involvement and has reportedly directed officials to refrain from commenting on the operation, which claimed at least ten lives, including that of a child, and left many injured or maimed. Initially, an aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted at possible involvement from Israel on X, but that post was later deleted.
U.S. and other officials mentioned by The New York Times indicate that Israel concealed explosives within a shipment of pagers imported from Taiwan, placing microcharges weighing several grams next to the battery in each device.
Both Reuters and The New York Times pointed to the firm Gold Apollo as the source of the altered equipment, stating that the pagers were produced by the European company BAC.
The intercepted shipment contained over 3,000 devices, which were distributed by the militant group Hezbollah among its members in Lebanon, with some reaching allies in Iran and Syria, according to The New York Times. Reuters reported that around 5,000 devices were rigged, with 3,000 ultimately detonated.
U.S. government sources informed Axios that Israel initiated the detonation due to concerns that Hezbollah operatives might uncover the explosives. One official described the situation as a “use it or lose it moment.” An Israeli source claimed that the booby-trapped pagers were intended as a damaging initial strike in the event of a full-scale conflict with Hezbollah.
On Monday, Amos Hochstein, a senior adviser to U.S. President Joe Biden, traveled to Israel for discussions with Netanyahu and high-ranking members of his government.
Washington asserts that it is pushing West Jerusalem to reach a peace agreement with Hamas, the Gaza-based militant organization responsible for last year's October 7 attack on Israel, which sparked the current military operations. This conflict has contributed to increasing regional tension, with ongoing low-intensity clashes along the Lebanese border.
The pager explosions have intensified fears of a broader conflict, Axios reported. Lebanese officials and Hezbollah leaders have blamed Israel, with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati characterizing the incident as a act of “criminal aggression” against Lebanon.
Among the victims was Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon Mojtaba Amini. Iran, allied with both Hamas and Hezbollah, has already faced attacks from Israel throughout this conflict.
