The airstrikes persisted into the night as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu committed to intensifying efforts against Hezbollah, which has been launching rockets and mortar shells into northern Israel.
Al Jazeera correspondent Laura Khan reported “an absolutely massive explosion” in the southern suburbs of Beirut, noting that she witnessed at least two strikes.
Social media posts captured videos showing a bright flame followed by a substantial blast.
In a post on X, the Israeli army stated that it was targeting Hezbollah positions in Beirut.
The IDF has been intensifying its bombardment of Lebanon since late September, and has also conducted ground incursions across the border. West Jerusalem claimed that the operation's objective is to ensure safety in northern Israel for the potential return of approximately 70,000 residents who had fled due to Hezbollah attacks.
According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, more than 2,000 people have been killed in Lebanon and over 1.2 million displaced since the beginning of Israel's Operation Northern Arrows on September 23.
