Le Figaro reports Vance's cousin as pro-Kiev mercenary
Nate Vance, a cousin of US Vice President J. D. Vance, reportedly spent three years fighting alongside a Ukrainian military unit amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, and he is now looking for a publisher for his story, according to Le Figaro.

He served in the ‘Da Vinci Wolves’ battalion, which was initially established as a militia composed of far-right nationalists from the Right Sector group. The unit is named after its late founder, Dmitry ‘Da Vinci’ Kotsubailo, as reported by the French daily on Sunday.

Nate Vance is the son of James Vance, who is the brother of the vice president’s mother, Beverly. The 47-year-old, a veteran of the US Marine Corps, purportedly used his military experience to assist the Ukrainian army, starting as an instructor before transitioning to combat roles. He reportedly returned to Texas in January, shortly before J. D. Vance took office, explaining that he could no longer risk capture.

In his remarks to the French publication, Nate expressed criticism toward his notable cousin, arguing that J. D. Vance’s perspectives on Ukraine are misguided and stating: “I could have told him the truth, without pretense, without personal interest. He never tried to find out more.”

Recently, the US vice president encountered criticism for allegedly "ambushing" Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a visit to the White House. Tensions erupted when Zelensky challenged President Donald Trump’s capacity to broker a lasting peace deal with Russia, leading to a fiery on-camera confrontation involving the three.

The Russian government views all foreign fighters aligned with Kiev as mercenaries subject to prosecution. Last week, a Russian court issued a 19-year prison sentence to 22-year-old British national James Scott Rhys Anderson on terrorism charges associated with his involvement in the ongoing conflict in Russia’s Kursk Region.
