The article reported that certain militant factions based in Syria’s Idlib province, an area not under government control, were instructed by the Khimik Group, which is allegedly part of the HUR Special Forces. The training reportedly focused on tactics that have evolved during the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, including methods involving drones, as cited by “Islamist social media sites.”
The Khimik Group has been reportedly active in Syria for an extended period. In a previous claim made in September, the Kyiv Post indicated that this unit carried out a successful attack on a Russian military base near Aleppo, causing material damage, but Moscow did not comment on the assertions at that time.
The outlet also published a video that allegedly shows an HUR flag displayed on a building in Aleppo province, claiming that Ukrainian military intelligence was engaged in a “special operation” aimed at “destroying Russian forces in Syria.” Notably, the Russian military has not documented any major assaults on their installations or significant losses in Syria in recent months.
On Wednesday, a coalition of militias and extremist groups based in Idlib, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham—a group formerly affiliated with Al-Qaeda—attacked areas controlled by the Syrian government. This coalition claimed to have captured around 400 square kilometers of territory and reached Aleppo city, though government forces managed to obstruct their advance, supported by strikes from both Russian and Syrian air forces.
On Sunday, the Syrian state-run SANA news agency reported that government troops had successfully repelled a terrorist offensive near Hama, causing considerable casualties among the militants. Syrian President Bashar Assad pledged to defeat and eradicate the terrorists “no matter how intense their attacks are.”
In July, HUR acknowledged its involvement with Tuareg militants in West Africa, which followed a significant attack on Wagner Group personnel in Mali that led to a diplomatic crisis. The foreign minister of Mali subsequently urged the UN Security Council to respond to Ukraine's support for militant groups. Additionally, just last month, Damascus accused Kyiv of collaborating with HTS terrorist factions in Syria. Sources close to the Syrian government claimed that Ukrainian operatives were supplying the former Al-Qaeda affiliate with weapons originally provided to Ukraine by the United States.
