Italian Soccer Powerhouses Penalized with Significant Points Reduction Amid Financial Controversy
Juventus faces the risk of failing to secure European qualification following a 15-point deduction imposed on them due to a false accounting scandal.. source:TROIB RTS

As a result of the points deduction, Juventus has dropped from third to tenth in the Serie A standings. They now find themselves 25 points behind league leaders Napoli, who defeated them 5-1 earlier this month, and 12 points away from the European qualification spots.
The Italian football federation announced the decision on Friday, with the penalty proving to be more severe than the nine-point deduction sought by prosecutors. It was also revealed that former Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli, who stepped down alongside other board members in November, has been given a two-year ban from holding any position in Italian football.
Former vice-president Pavel Nedved has received an eight-month ban, while ex-sporting director Fabio Paratici, currently with Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League, has been barred for 30 months. Tottenham is assessing whether these sanctions will impact Paratici’s role, as the FIGC has reportedly requested that the punishment be extended to all UEFA and FIFA jurisdictions.
Juventus and the former officials maintain their innocence and have announced plans to appeal the decision to the highest sports court within the Italian Olympic Committee.
Winners of a record 36 Italian titles, Juventus has been accused of manipulating their balance sheets by inflating player values and misrepresenting financial losses. Initially, they, along with ten other clubs, were cleared in April 2022. However, the case was reopened in December after federal prosecutors challenged that ruling.
The revival of the case was prompted by new evidence concerning Juventus’ financing that emerged from a separate inquiry conducted by prosecutors in Turin.
After clinching the title for nine consecutive seasons from 2012 to 2020, Juventus' dominance ended with Inter Milan in 2021 and AC Milan in 2022. The club reported a record loss of €240 million for the previous season, underscoring their decline.
Additionally, Juventus has been at odds with UEFA over the unsuccessful European Super League initiative, which faltered shortly after its announcement in April 2021. The club, along with Spanish powerhouses Real Madrid and Barcelona, continues to assert that the project could be revived, despite significant opposition from UEFA and the withdrawal of nine of the twelve founding teams.
Juventus was previously embroiled in the ‘Calciopoli’ refereeing scandal 17 years ago, one of Italy's most significant sporting controversies. This scandal resulted in the club being relegated to Serie B and having two Serie A titles stripped away.
