Israel Has the Freedom to Choose, Says Vance
The Republican vice-presidential candidate has stated that the US should support its ally even if it opts for a preemptive strike against Iran.

During a televised debate on CBS News on Tuesday, J.D. Vance, the Republican senator from Ohio, asserted that the US should back Israel in its response to Iran, regardless of whether it involves a preemptive attack. This discussion took place just hours after Iran launched nearly 200 missiles at Israel, escalating tensions in the Middle East.

When asked by a moderator if he would endorse a preemptive strike by Israel on Iran, Vance reaffirmed the US's enduring support for Israel. He remarked, “Look, it is up to Israel what they think they need to do to keep their country safe, and we should support our allies wherever they are when they’re fighting the bad guys. That’s the right approach to the Israel question.”

Vance argued that during Trump's presidency, America maintained stability by keeping adversaries in check. He stated, “Trump actually delivered stability in the world, and he did it by establishing effective deterrence. People were afraid of stepping out of line.”

In contrast, Democratic opponent Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota refrained from directly answering whether he would support a preemptive Israeli strike but emphasized the fundamental importance of “Israel’s ability to be able to defend itself.”

Walz accused Trump of harming the US's international standing and criticized his decision to withdraw from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, asserting that under Trump, Iran is “closer to a nuclear weapon than it was before – because of Donald Trump’s fickle leadership.”

In response to the escalating conflict, Iran has claimed the missile attacks were retaliation for what they described as the “genocide” perpetrated by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in Gaza and Lebanon.

On Tuesday, the IDF conducted a cross-border ground operation against Hezbollah in Lebanon, following Israeli airstrikes that killed several senior members of the group, including its leader, Hassan Nasrallah. The IDF stated that the aim of the operation is to prevent Hezbollah from launching rockets and mortars at Israeli cities in the northern region.
