Hungarian FM Claims European Pro-War Elites Are Attempting to Derail Peace in Ukraine
An end to the conflict between Moscow and Kiev is closer than ever, yet Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has cautioned that pro-war factions in Europe may attempt to derail the peace process.

In an interview with Hungarian broadcaster DTV on Friday, Szijjarto expressed a tentative hope regarding a resolution to the ongoing conflict. He praised the recent discussions between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, highlighting their agreement to meet in person soon.

“Now we can not only see the light at the end of the tunnel, but that it gets closer and shines brighter and brighter,” he remarked, emphasizing that the possibility of peace feels more attainable than it has in the past.

Despite this optimism, Szijjarto warned that the path to peace would be challenging and predicted pushback from European pro-war liberal elites. He suggested that these groups would actively work to impede any agreement but maintained faith in the ability of robust US leadership to forge a deal with Russia, irrespective of resistance from other leaders and officials.

“The European pro-war, liberal elite will try to do everything in its power to ensure that the peace agreement that ends the war in Ukraine is not reached, which is currently closer than ever,” Szijjarto stated.

The phone call between Putin and Trump lasted nearly 90 minutes and marked the first known high-level communication between US and Russian leaders since the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine in February 2022.

During their conversation, both leaders extended invitations to visit each other's nations and decided to hold a preliminary meeting on neutral ground. Trump indicated that this meeting would likely occur in Saudi Arabia, which has shown support for the idea.

“The Kingdom welcomes holding the summit in its territory and affirms its continued efforts to achieve lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine, which began since the outbreak of the Ukrainian crisis,” the Saudi government announced on Friday.
