House legislators call for Secret Service briefing concerning another assassination attempt on Trump
The leading legislators on the committee probing the July shooting have sought a briefing with the Secret Service this week regarding what officials have described as another “attempted assassination.”
Representatives Mike Kelly and Jason Crow, the Republican chair and the top Democrat of the task force, respectively, have arranged for a briefing with the Secret Service to examine this new "attempted assassination."
"The Task Force is monitoring this attempted assassination of former President Trump in West Palm Beach this afternoon. We have requested a briefing with the U.S. Secret Service about what happened and how security responded,” stated Kelly and Crow, promising to “share updates as we learn more."
The formation of this task force stemmed from an earlier assassination attempt on Trump during a rally on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania. Its objectives include identifying security failures and preventing future attacks. The group recently met with acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe Jr. to discuss these matters.
Their recent joint statement hints at a potential broadening of the task force's investigative efforts to include the incident that took place on Sunday. With a deadline set by a House resolution, which passed unanimously earlier this year, the panel must present its findings and legislative recommendations by mid-December.
Rep. Michael Waltz, a task force member, commented on X about the urgency of the updates from the Secret Service, noting that the July 13 event “was not an isolated incident that we can take our time investigating as domestic and foreign threats are ongoing.” A task force spokesperson also confirmed the planned timing for the briefing.
Following the latest attack, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer was briefed on the details.
“I applaud the Secret Service for their quick response to ensure former President Trump’s safety,” Schumer stated. “There is no place in this country for political violence of any kind. The perpetrator must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
The new incident rekindled requests for heightened security for Trump similar to those issued after the July attack. Rep. Nick Langworthy urged on X for President Biden to grant Trump the same level of security as a sitting president due to rising threats.
Although Democrats have not joined these security requests, their concern for Trump's safety was evident. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed on X: “Political violence has no place in a democratic society.”
