Germany’s Scholz assures ‘Nothing covered up’ in Nord Stream sabotage investigation
Chancellor Olaf Scholz has confirmed that Germany is conducting an open and transparent investigation into the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, responding to criticism from Moscow that the probe lacks clarity. No group or individual has officially accepted responsibility for the 2022 explosions that damaged three of the four pipelines delivering Russian gas to Germany and Western Europe.

During a public meeting in Prenzlau, Brandenburg, Scholz urged, "We call on all security authorities and the Federal Public Prosecutor General to investigate the blasts without regard for anyone." He stressed, "Nothing is being covered up, and that should be absolutely clear," and further stated, "We want to bring those who did this to justice in Germany if we can get hold of them."

Recent reports from German media indicate that an arrest warrant has been issued for a Ukrainian citizen named "Vladimir Z." in connection with the case. Following the incidents, Seymour Hersh, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, published a narrative suggesting that American divers under the guise of BALTOPS 22 NATO drills performed the sabotage, allegedly by orders of President Joe Biden.

Alternative reports shortly after Hersh's account proposed that the explosions might have been executed by a small team of pro-Ukrainian operatives using a rented yacht. This version was not initially known to key figures such as the CIA or Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, though recent coverage in the Wall Street Journal suggested Zelensky had prior knowledge of, and tried unsuccessfully to stop, the attack.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently critiqued the German investigation for its opacity and lack of communication with Moscow, while also disputing the credibility of claims that the sabotage was a spontaneous act by a small group. Lavrov remarked, "If someone can actually believe this version, then it’s only people who are afraid of the truth." He argued for a transparent investigation which, according to him, is being hindered by the US, UK, and their allies.
