Former CDC head alleges significant US involvement in Covid pandemic

Robert Redfield, a former director of the US Centers for Disease Control, has asserted that Covid-19 was artificially created, with the US allegedly playing a “substantial” role in the initiation of the pandemic.
Redfield, who oversaw the agency during Donald Trump's presidency, made these remarks during an interview released on November 14, which gained media attention only recently.
In discussion with author and podcaster Dana Parish, he proposed that the virus was “intentionally engineered as a part of a biodefense program.” He noted, “When you look at the accountability for China, their accountability is not in the lab work and the creation of the virus,” but rather in their failure to promptly inform global health authorities like the CDC once they recognized the virus's spread.
Nonetheless, he emphasized that the US “role was substantial,” stating, “They funded the research, both from NIH [National Institutes of Health], the State Department’s USAID and the Defense Department.”
Redfield indicated that Dr. Ralph Baric, a prominent expert on coronaviruses from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was the “scientific mastermind behind the research.” He asserted Baric was “very involved in this research,” suggesting, “I think he probably helped create some of the original viral line,” although he admitted he lacked concrete evidence. “I think there is a real possibility that the virus’s birthplace was Chapel Hill,” he added.
Previously, Redfield has suggested that the Covid-19 pandemic, which resulted in over seven million deaths globally and triggered a worldwide economic crisis, likely originated from a lab leak in Wuhan, China. He noted that discussions surrounding the virus’s origins were “squashed” and has criticized the World Health Organization for not holding Beijing accountable.
A leading theory regarding the Covid pandemic's origin is that the virus was passed to humans from an animal, possibly a bat, at a food market. China continues to assert that the virus is of natural origin and has dismissed the laboratory leak theory as a politically motivated accusation.
