German authorities investigate 'suspicious drones' near a Ukrainian military training facility

German police have initiated an investigation into suspicious drone sightings occurring near the sole military base in the country where Ukrainian troops train to operate U.S.-made Patriot missile batteries. This action follows a report from Sueddeutsche Zeitung, which disclosed a confidential German military document that acknowledged the sightings and noted that “Investigations are underway on suspicion of espionage.”
The report further detailed that “Multi-wing aircraft… hovered in place for minutes with their position lights on.”
On Monday, the Schleswig-Holstein State police department confirmed that they are investigating these reported incidents. A spokeswoman for the department informed dpa news agency, “We can confirm that the Schleswig-Holstein State Criminal Police Office is examining the incidents reported by the Bundeswehr and has taken over the investigation.”
Unidentified unmanned aerial vehicles were reportedly detected near the base on at least six occasions last month. According to the report, air defense systems were ineffective against the advanced drones, as all attempts to deploy jammers failed. The newspaper noted that no drone operators were identified during any of the six incidents, prompting involvement from military police and counterintelligence services in the ongoing investigation.
A spokesman for a regional public prosecutor’s office stated, “There is currently no information available that could justify the assumption” that the drone sightings are linked to any illicit activities.
Additionally, German state-funded broadcaster ARD reported that extra detectors and jamming systems have been implemented at the base, located near the town of Husum close to the Danish border, which houses the country’s “Air Defense Missile Training Center.”
Some media outlets suggest that the German military suspects the drones might have originated from vessels in the North or Baltic Seas.
In recent months, Germany has reported numerous drone sightings near various critical infrastructure sites. In December, unidentified UAVs were observed near the U.S. Rammstein air base, a location used for meetings by Western supporters of Kiev, as well as near a BASF chemical plant. Last August, drones were sighted near infrastructure facilities in the northern town of Brunsbuttel.
