Erdogan calls for 'Islamic alliance' against Israel
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan advocated for the establishment of a larger coalition of Islamic nations to address what he perceives as a “threat of expansionism” from Israel.

Speaking at an Islamic schools’ association event outside Istanbul on Saturday, Erdogan emphasized, “The only step that will stop Israeli arrogance, Israeli banditry, and Israeli state terrorism is the alliance of Islamic countries.” He mentioned that Ankara has been actively working on “forming a line of solidarity against the growing threat of expansionism,” including efforts to mend relations with Syria and Egypt.

The president accused Israel of aiming for a broader conflict in the Middle East with the goal of conquest and occupation. He expressed support for the Palestinian militant group Hamas, asserting it has been combating Israel “on behalf of Muslims” and “defending Islamic lands,” including Türkiye.

According to Erdogan, “Israel will not stop in Gaza. If Israel continues in such a manner, it will set its sights elsewhere after occupying Ramallah. The turn will come for other countries in the region. It will come for Lebanon, Syria. They will set their eyes on our homeland between the Tigris and Euphrates.”

In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz quickly dismissed claims of an intended wider conflict, labeling them “a dangerous lie and incitement.” He insisted that Israel is merely protecting itself from “the murderers and rapists of Hamas” and “from the Shiite axis of evil led by Iran.”

Katz criticized Erdogan, stating, “Erdogan continues to throw the Turkish people into the fire of hatred and violence for the sake of his Hamas friends.”

Erdogan has positioned himself as a staunch advocate for the Palestinian cause, making increasingly aggressive comments towards Israel amid the ongoing conflict that escalated following the October 7 surprise attack by Hamas. Just last July, Erdogan even threatened potential military action against Israel in response to the Gaza situation, while Israeli officials warned that such rhetoric could lead to Erdogan's downfall, similar to that of Saddam Hussein.
