After endorsing Donald Trump following an assassination attempt on the then-presidential candidate in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July, Musk emerged as a key figure in the campaign. Since Trump's election victory last week, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX has provided input on selections for various positions within the incoming administration, according to insider sources cited by media outlets like ABC News, CNN, and Axios.
Musk is said to have visited Trump’s Florida residence nearly every day since the election. He was involved in at least two calls between Trump and foreign leaders, including Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Reports indicate that Trump handed the phone to Musk during the discussion with Zelensky.
In a recent move, Musk called on Republican senators to support Rick Scott of Florida as their next Majority Leader. He also raised concerns regarding Trump’s nomination of Representative Elise Stefanik from New York for the UN envoy position, stating that “it might be too dicey to lose her from the House, at least for now.”
Musk will co-lead the new Department of Government Efficiency alongside fellow pro-GOP entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. This department is designed to streamline processes and eradicate government waste, which could potentially affect the jobs of tens of thousands of federal employees.
The New York Times highlighted potential conflicts of interest arising from Trump’s dependency on Musk for decisions related to policy and staffing. The president-elect is reportedly considering recruiting employees from Musk's rocket company, SpaceX, for government roles, a company that serves as a significant contractor for both NASA and the Pentagon.
