Trump has announced a 10% tariff on all Chinese products, adding to the existing duties on imports from China. He has cited trade imbalances and fentanyl-related drug trafficking as reasons for the new tariffs, arguing that these measures are essential to safeguard American interests.
In retaliation, China has enacted tariffs on significant US exports, including a 15% levy on coal and liquefied natural gas, as well as a 10% tariff on crude oil and agricultural machinery. Furthermore, Beijing has initiated an antitrust investigation into Google, indicating potential regulatory scrutiny of US technology companies.
During a routine press briefing on Wednesday, Lin reiterated China’s stance and asserted that there are no winners in trade wars, emphasizing that pressure will not compel Beijing to yield. He urged the US to retract its tariff decisions and to address its concerns through equitable discussions, advocating for the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of Sino-US relations.
In a related development, Trump has played down the urgency of resolving the trade dispute, stating that he is in “no rush” to communicate with Chinese President Xi Jinping. While the White House confirmed that Xi has sought discussions, no meeting has been planned.
Previously, Trump had enacted a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, later suspending those tariffs after negotiations regarding border security and drug trafficking. Additionally, he has threatened to impose tariffs on the European Union if it does not increase its purchases of American oil and gas, prompting European leaders to caution against a potential trade war. European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen has stated that the bloc is prepared to take necessary actions to safeguard its interests.
