Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the idea from US President-elect Donald Trump to claim Greenland is not a good one and will never materialize. Trump has suggested that American control over the Arctic island is essential for national security and has hinted at the possibility of using force to secure the Danish autonomous territory if needed.
“The idea expressed about Greenland is obviously not a good one,” Blinken commented on Wednesday at a joint press conference in Paris with his French counterpart, Jean-Noel Barrot. He further remarked, “But it’s not going to happen, so we shouldn’t waste time talking about it.”
During his final international visit before President Joe Biden's departure from office and Trump's inauguration on January 20, Blinken has made stops in South Korea, Japan, and France. With a background as a foreign policy adviser to Biden, he has spent the last four years opposing Trump's policies from his tenure between 2017 and 2021.
Trump, who elected in November 2024, secured both the electoral college and the popular vote, won against Biden's former running mate, Kamala Harris.
In the past weeks, the president-elect has reignited interest in Greenland, a territory he had previously attempted to purchase from Denmark. He claimed control of the island was an “absolute necessity” for US national security on Tuesday.
When pressed at a Mar-a-Lago press conference about whether he could “assure the world” that he wouldn't employ “military or economic coercion” in his pursuit of Greenland or the Panama Canal, Trump replied that he could not.
“No, I can’t assure you on either of those two. But I can say this, we need them for economic security,” he stated. He also expressed skepticism over Denmark's legal claim to Greenland, suggesting, “People really don’t even know if Denmark has any legal right to it, but if they do, they should give it up because we need it.”
Additionally, Donald Trump Jr., the president’s son, visited Greenland on Tuesday, spending several hours in the territory's capital, Nuuk, accompanied by aides and a documentary crew.
