Biden Urges Ceasefire in Lebanon
Israel has reportedly informed the United States of plans to undertake a “limited incursion” into Lebanon.

In the midst of this situation, US President Joe Biden has called for an immediate truce in the Middle East. Meanwhile, anonymous officials in Washington have suggested that an Israeli ground offensive may soon occur.

This anticipated invasion follows more than a week of air and missile strikes that have taken a significant toll, reportedly resulting in the deaths of hundreds of Lebanese civilians and several senior Hezbollah officials, including the group's leader, Hassan Nasrallah.

“I’m more aware than you might know and I’m comfortable with them stopping,” Biden stated to reporters at the White House on Monday when asked about the reports of an impending Israeli operation. He further added, “We should have a ceasefire now,” before leaving the briefing.

Before Biden's press conference, which was held to address damages caused by hurricanes in several US states, various media outlets reported that Israel had notified Washington of a military operation planned for Lebanon.

CBS News quoted an anonymous US official confirming that Israel intends to initiate “a limited ground incursion” into its northern neighbor, potentially beginning “within hours.”

Fox News echoed this sentiment with similar wording, describing the timeline for the assault as “in the imminent future.”

The Washington Post also cited an anonymous official indicating that Israel had informed the US of a “limited ground operation… that could start imminently.”

According to the source who spoke to the Post, this Israeli campaign would be “smaller” than the 2006 attack on Lebanon, focusing on “clearing out” Hezbollah positions along the border. Although both Israel and Hezbollah declared victory in the 2006 conflict, an Israeli government commission later deemed it a strategic defeat.

Last week, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, chief of the Israel Defense Forces general staff, stated that the airstrikes against Hezbollah were aimed at preparing for a ground attack where the IDF would “go in, destroy the enemy there, and decisively destroy their infrastructure.”

In response, Hezbollah’s deputy leader, Naim Qassem, remarked that the “resistance forces are ready for a ground engagement” with Israeli troops.
