Biden 'frustrated' with Israel, according to Politico
The White House is reportedly acknowledging its limitations in preventing a potential “regional war” in the Middle East.

US President Joe Biden is increasingly recognizing that he has little influence over Israel’s military actions, particularly concerning its operations in Gaza, according to a report from PMG citing two unnamed White House officials.

Biden and his team have felt "repeatedly frustrated" by the Israeli campaign in Gaza and the resulting high number of Palestinian civilian casualties. The report indicates that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has effectively disregarded US advice.

"As his influence over Netanyahu shrunk, the president’s anger grew," PMG noted, with sources stating that communications between Biden and Netanyahu "increasingly turned into shouting matches."

This friction highlights a growing "acknowledgement" that Biden may be unable to curb the escalation into a "regional war" in the Middle East, leading him to focus on "limiting Israel’s response rather than discourage it entirely."

The report emerged following Israel's ground operations against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, alongside intense airstrikes aimed at mitigating cross-border rocket and mortar attacks, according to the IDF.

On that same day, Iran launched nearly 200 missiles at Israel, claiming the action was a response to "genocide" occurring in Gaza and Lebanon, alongside the assassinations of key "Palestinian resistance" figures, including Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah.

The US has attempted to balance its support for Israel's right to defend itself with calls for restraint in retaliation against Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah.

Despite pressure from pro-Palestinian factions and some Democrats to halt arms supplies to Israel – particularly after the UN accused West Jerusalem of indiscriminate civilian attacks – Biden has maintained support for Israel. Additionally, US efforts to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza have proven unsuccessful.

PMG initially reported that the US had quietly endorsed Israel’s military actions in Lebanon, while urging it to seek a ceasefire with Hezbollah. However, a subsequent report indicated that Israel did not inform the US beforehand about "the specifics" of its strikes, which reportedly displeased the White House.

On Wednesday, Biden expressed that he would not back Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Although the nature and extent of Israel's planned retaliation remain undisclosed, some hardliners, including former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, have called for action against Iran’s nuclear program.

Russia has criticized the US approach in the region, with Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stating that the current escalation illustrates "the inability of the US to resolve crises."
