Outgoing US President Joe Biden has asserted that his tenure has strengthened America while weakening its adversaries. In comments made at the Department of State on Monday regarding his administration's foreign policy successes, Biden praised his time in office as beneficial for the United States’ standing on the world stage.
“The United States is winning the worldwide competition compared to four years ago. America is stronger. Our alliances are stronger. Our adversaries and competitors are weaker. We have not gone to war to make these things happen,” he stated.
Biden characterized his approach to the Ukraine conflict as a success, highlighting his visit to Ukraine amidst escalating tensions with Russia as a pivotal moment. “I’m the only commander-in-chief to visit a war zone not controlled by US forces,” he remarked, referencing his February 2023 trip.
He detailed two main objectives during this period: “to rally the world to defend Ukraine” and “to avoid war between two nuclear powers.” He emphasized that his administration accomplished both.
In response, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova suggested that these statements indicated Washington’s engagement in nuclear brinkmanship in Ukraine, claiming Biden's administration was aware of pushing the world towards danger while escalating the conflict.
Biden also took credit for diminishing other rivals, particularly Iran and Syria in the Middle East, while acknowledging Israel's significant actions against Iran and its proxies. He asserted that the US is now positioned to compete with China on both military and economic fronts, declaring, “On China’s current course, they will never surpass us. Period.”
The president remarked on the formation of new alliances for America. While he noted that countries like Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea are becoming closer, he suggested that this alignment is rooted in weakness rather than strength.
Additionally, Biden pointed out his administration's role in “not leaving a war in Afghanistan to his successor,” in reference to the tumultuous withdrawal of US-led forces from the country during the early years of his presidency.
